Overtime Penalty Stroke Gives Drexel 3-2 Win Over La Salle

Drexel field hockey defeated La Salle in stunning fashion as sophomore Carolina Gibernau (Montevideo, Uruguay/Universidad de la Republica) scored on a penalty stroke in overtime to give the Dragons their first victory of the season, 3-2. The win evened Drexel's record at 1-1 while La Salle suffered its first defeat of the season to drop to 2-1. Freshman Susan Ciufo (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) scored both of Drexel's goals in regulation.
Gibernau converted a penalty stroke after senior Sarah Gostomski (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) eluded three defenders and drew a foul on a breakaway in the arc just three minutes into overtime. Gostomski had a stellar game setting up both goals in regulation and drawing the penalty stroke in overtime. Gostomski sent a shot off a penalty corner in front of the cage where it found the stick of Ciufo who deflected it past La Salle goalie Ellen Axelsen to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first the Explorers had given up in over 180 minutes of action this season. La Salle responded with the equalizer minutes later but Gostomski helped the Dragons regain the lead. Gostomski controlled a corner and fired a shot that found the stick of Amanda Kicera (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) in front. Kicera poked the ball past Axelsen where Ciufo finished the play for her second goal of the day. La Salle answered just minutes later to send the game into overtime. Gibernau's penalty stroke in overtime finished off the Explorers and gave the Dragons their first win of the season.
The Dragons conclude their season-opening three-game road trip on Saturday, Sept. 2 at St. Francis (Pa.). Game time is noon.
